The initial outbreak began in Guinea in February 2014, and there are (as of July 2014) currently over 1300 cases and 729 deaths.
Ebola Virus Disease, or Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever is a human disease caused by the Ebola virus. Symptoms normally start two days to three weeks after one has contracted the virus, with a fever, throat & muscle pain, and headache. There is then typically nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, along with decreased functioning of the liver and kidneys. At this point, people may have problems with bleeding.
This disease has a high mortality rate and is extremely severe. 50 to 90% of the people who contract it die, and infected corpses remain a vector of transmission. Infected monkeys and pigs can transmit this disease to humans.
This disease has been around much longer than the current 2014 outbreak in West Africa. It's had some epidemic episodes.

Some people are saying that this disease has the ability to become a pandemic, and it's easy to see why. It's very infectious, but the CDC and WHO are currently doing everything they can to create a cure.
However, I have a theory about the Ebola Virus. It's extremely lethal, perhaps too lethal. My theory is that the virus will kill all its hosts and die out before it can spread to all corners of the globe. I'm currently conducting research to see if my theory is correct.
In the meantime, what are your thoughts on the outbreak? Do you also believe it has the ability to become a pandemic?

Practically something like rabies except it's instant death, and with no vaccine? (Probably)

Practically something like rabies except it's instant death, and with no vaccine? (Probably) They've started making a cure, and treatment has done well for an Ebola patient named Dr. Kent Bradley (the first ebola patient to step on american soil). And it's transported through bodily fluids, but it's not very contagious. A sneeze or cough getting through the pores usually won't get you infected. It's kind of like a sniper rifle, hard to aim but deadly if the bullet hits.

UPDATES: Beat is right, an (experimental) cure is being developed and tested on, but the United Nations has recently declared this a public health emergency, and Guinea has closed it's borders in order to prevent spreading.

UPDATE: Between August 19th and 20th, 142 new cases and 77 deaths were reported from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria. The UN and WHO have promised a redoubled effort to bring the epidemic under control.
That's right, it's been declared an EPIDEMIC. And also, there are several other people infected that have not been identified. This means that there may be thousands more in Africa infected with Ebola that we don't even KNOW about.
WHO estimates that it will take 6 to 9 months to contain the outbreak. They're gonna do the absolute best they can to contain it, but it's really tough.

UPDATE: Finally, some good news! The two Americans that were infected are now IMMUNE to the Ebola strain! Scientists say that once you've gotten it once, you're immune to it for life. This could be a major turning point in counteracting the epidemic. [Also, they did give the two Americans the ZMapp drug, so that may have helped too.]

UPDATE: The CDC director, Thomas Frieden, is calling for worldwide aid to help contain the Ebola outbreak. "I could not possibly overstate the need for an emergency response," He said after returning from Africa. "There is a window of opportunity to tamp this down, but that window is closing. ...We need action now."
This situation is getting worse. If it infects more countries, it invites the possibility of having a mutation that makes it easier to spread.
I repeat: WE ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE. I suggest stocking up on supplies [food, water, medicine, etc] in case this hits the USA and other countries.
